The Name Game!

If you have seen The Dawg Howse recently, then you know about the quest for "What's in a name". In other words, why did you name your blog what you did. Here is my "why."

My name is not really Libby. It is a nickname my mother gave me ... I guess almost since birth! She had a little neighbor girl that had blonde hair and blue eyes whose family nicknamed Libby. She thought the girl and her name were really cute so tagged me with it. That's ok with me. My name is unique enough that I rarely meet someone else named Libby. If I'm in public, and someone yells Libby I can be pretty sure that I'M the Libby who should turn around and look.

The... err... side effect to my name, however, is that all through school I had the Libby's canned goods jingle sung
every time I was introduced to someone. (If you're not old enough to remember, it went like this: Libby's Libby's Libby's on the label label label. You will like it, like it, like it on your table, table, table.) People were always sure they were the first to think of it. I just let them believe that.

Instead of getting ticked off about it, I decided to use it to my advantage. When introduced to someone who seems to be having difficulty with my name I will say, "You know. Like Libby's fruit cocktail?" They seem to never forget then.

Fruit cocktail seems to be a food that describes me anyway. I love bright colors and each scoop is different from the last so you're never quite sure what's coming next!

I'll answer that for her since she can't blog from school. Her real name is Caryl (pronounced Carol). A funny story about that: Right after we moved back to Illinois in 1991, we were at a Christmas Dinner for the ministers and their spouses from the state. Since there were several new ministers in the state, all the men were asked to get up and introduce themselves and their wife. When it came my turn, I introduced her as Caryl, and a lot of people gasped in the room because they thought I had slipped and said someone elses name instead of my wife. I had to stand back up and say, "You know her as Libby, but her name is Caryl." Very few people know her real name.

isn't it funny how people and their names seem to fit.........somehow Libby fits better than Caryl! there's a guy at work who hates his given name and just goes by his initials, that's how everyone knows him and it fits him and we know better than to call him by his given name, because he gets mad!!

Thats too funny pastor!! & Ruth I agree Libby does fit her better, As far as nicknames go, only my family will ever know mine hee hee!!!(yes its that bad ,my aunt gave it to me ,she is an onrey thing!!!)I need a new one!!

My good friend is named Libby. Another friend of ours always sings that song because when they were growing up her Mom sang it whenever Libby would go over there or if someone was talking about her.

Another funny thing. There is another Libby in town that is around our age. She happens to be a Miller girl. People constanly say they didn't know my friend Libby was a Miller girl. She gets so mad and is constantly saying NO that is the other Libby. People say it to her Dad a lot.

Well how cute is that! And I do remember that jingle. Hadn't thought of it in years but I sure remember it. And I know for sure that's the jingle that's going to start going around in my head tonight when I go to bed. Geez. I know it!

You have a cute blog here. I loved the post you did on all the planets. I go outside every night (with my little dog), stare up at the stars and am reminded that I am a speck. Just a speck.

Thank you so much for stopping by and answering my question.

What a great explanation! It makes me think of the "Life is like a box of chocolates" from FG. Thanks for sharing Libby and I hope your new school year has started off with a bang! I also pray that there are no incidents with police, fire, or ambulances this year.....hehe

Hi Libby,
I saw your comment at Kathleen Marie's. I love how you named your blog and I remember the Libby's jingle very well. We used to fight over the two cherries that were in every can!!

Well, I have to admit Libby is not my given name either. It is a nickname I have given myself because my given name is a VERY common one. I grew tired of getting the wrong drink at Starbucks, having people take my seat at restaurants and having to use my last initial to distinguish me from all of the other _______'s in the world. I love the Libby's jingle - and so many others. I have been able to ease into answering to Libby without too much trouble and find GREAT delight in not being able to find anything personalized - keychains, etc. with Libby on them.

I followed you over from Sue's. I think you look so much like Ann Margaret, I just had to tell you. But I have a feeling you've been told that plenty of times!

I remember the Libby's commercial too. In fact I often repeat it when I'm opening up a can!

Nice to mee you.

Well, "Mom Called me Sadie", actually I don't know if anyone has ever said that before. I have been told that I look like Mary from Little House On the Praire many times but never Ann Margaret. However, THANK YOU very much!:)

I really don't have many nicknames from my mom, except for little bit, but my brother calls me weasel. My dad calls me many different names. But when I'm called Nicole(my middle name) I'm in BIG TROUBLE!!! I usually want to run after that word's said.

Well, since there's 19 comments on here - I figured I'd make it even and give #20...my name is....

Carol Amber Elizabeth (Wheeler) Karns

My mothers middle name is Carol, but she had a dream when she was a teen that she had a little girl and named her Amber, but called her Amy...

Well, they like the name Amber so much, they didn't call me Amy (thank goodness, cuz I have enough problems with all my legal records going by my 2nd name, but 1st middle name...).
